Chess

It was the first day out and I was walking around hoping to chance upon someone who would honour me by allowing me to photograph them. That’s when I met chess guy. I regrettably didn’t get his name, but at least that reminded me to make an effort to do so next time whenever I photograph someone. Which will eventually lead me to posting pictures of John, Roberto, India, Willie and Conrad next time.
So as he gestured for me to come sit and play with him, I wondered what it must be like to sit there everyday, a very different life from my own. He showed me some moves, he was so fast, I didn’t get anything. And he let me photograph him. My first stranger in New York and I don’t even know his name.
I really liked the one with the zoom at the hand, I think is very expressive and a little detail like the way the hand moves can tell you many things about the guy’s personality, even tough you didn’t have his name the way this image is captured and framed talks by itself abut the guy’s experience of life.

What I like about your work is that you try to get to know the people you photograph. You get to know the history behind each portrait, thats very nice.

Is it true that you like the happy side of life? I have seen very few pictures on your blog that are depressing or dark. Even when you photograph people to try to make them look very adorable be it a homeless person or anyone, they way you change emotions and make viewer’s read something they are not supposed to is awesome.

I enjoy watching those pictures : one with the face of this guy, and an other one in close-up on his hands. I do like this kind of picture. You see the guy playing ( here looking at the objective with a certain passion ) and after his game… Really good shoot !
